Rapid and High Sensitivity Malaria Diagnosis: a Microfluidics Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most malaria deaths could be prevented if the infection is detected early. Thus, it is important to have access to a fast, sensitive, and reliable detection tool for the diagnosis of malaria in the clinical settings. However, the current malaria diagnosis relies on microscopic examination of blood smear, which is time consuming and labor intensive. Here, we present a novel malaria diagnosis technique for the rapid detection and quantification of malaria infected red blood cells. The technique combines the use of margination for the separation of malaria infected cells and magnetic resonance relaxometry system for the detection of malaria parasites.

Cost-Effectiveness analysis of malaria diagnosis techniques in patients with suspected malaria in Hormozgan province- 2012
Introduction: Since ancient times Malaria in Iran has been considered as a serious health risk, especially in Hormozgan Province, as no other disease like Malaria has imposed irreparable financial and life losses to the country. Since saving costs in the healthcare sector comes as first priority in most countries, this study aims at launching a cost-effectiveness analysis on malaria diagnosis d...
متن کاملLaboratory diagnosis methods of malaria infection
Background and Aim: To manage and control malaria - one of the most important infectious diseases in tropical and subtropical regions – a quick and accurate malaria diagnosis method is necessary as a high priority. For this purpose, several methods have been developed for the diagnosis of malaria, and currently, the examining the peripheral blood slide with an optical microscope as a gold stand...
متن کاملApplication of Microfluidic Device to Malaria Diagnosis
Of many diagnostic devices and technology developed, microfluidics could be superior in terms of ease of fabrication, cost, portability, speed and sensitivity. The application of diagnosis of malaria infection by microfluidics is studied. Malaria infected red blood cells will cause a cell stiffening, and the different behaviors of iRBCs could be detected by microfluidics. The malaria market and...
متن کاملEnhancing malaria diagnosis through microfluidic cell enrichment and magnetic resonance relaxometry detection
Despite significant advancements over the years, there remains an urgent need for low cost diagnostic approaches that allow for rapid, reliable and sensitive detection of malaria parasites in clinical samples. Our previous work has shown that magnetic resonance relaxometry (MRR) is a potentially highly sensitive tool for malaria diagnosis. A key challenge for making MRR based malaria diagnostic...
